Diamonds have long been admired as symbols of love, luxury, and timeless elegance. How Are Natural Diamonds Formed?

To understand lab-grown diamonds, it is important to know how natural diamonds are formed.
Natural diamonds are created approximately 150–200 kilometers below the Earth’s surface under extreme heat and pressure. This process takes millions to billions of years, where carbon atoms bond together and crystallize into diamonds.
Volcanic eruptions eventually bring these diamonds closer to the Earth’s surface through kimberlite pipes, where they are mined and processed.
While nature takes billions of years to create a diamond, modern technology can recreate the same conditions and produce a diamond in just a few weeks.

Understanding CVD Diamond Technology

What Is CVD?

CVD stands for Chemical Vapour Deposition, one of the most advanced methods used to create high-quality lab-grown diamonds.
The process begins with a tiny diamond seed placed inside a specialized chamber.
The chamber is filled with carbon-rich gases, usually methane and hydrogen. These gases are heated to extremely high temperatures, causing carbon atoms to separate and slowly deposit onto the diamond seed.
Layer by layer, the carbon atoms build a diamond crystal.

CVD Diamond Growing Process

Step 1: Placement of Diamond Seed

A thin slice of diamond is placed inside a vacuum chamber and acts as the foundation for the new diamond growth.

Step 2: Introduction of Carbon Gases

The chamber is filled with methane and hydrogen gases, which contain the carbon required to grow the diamond.

Step 3: Heating and Ionization

Microwave energy converts the gases into plasma, breaking the molecular bonds and allowing carbon atoms to settle on the seed.

Step 4: Crystal Growth

Over several weeks, carbon atoms arrange themselves into the diamond crystal structure, gradually forming a rough diamond.

Step 5: Treatment and Finishing

The rough diamond may undergo treatments to improve colour and quality before being cut and polished.

Understanding HPHT Diamond Technology

What Is HPHT?

HPHT stands for High Pressure High Temperature. This technique replicates the natural environment where diamonds are formed beneath the Earth’s surface.
A small diamond seed is placed with a carbon source inside a specialized machine that generates extremely high pressure and temperature.
The carbon melts and attaches to the seed, allowing a diamond crystal to grow.
